A room where grief does not need explaining

Grief can be isolating. The people around you carry on, the conversations move to other things, and the loss stays with you. This group is two hours every fortnight where that is understood without you having to explain it.

For adults in Perth who are grieving a death, a relationship, a diagnosis, a role or a future that has changed.

An open group

There is no set programme and no planned content. Each session follows what the people in the room bring on the day.

Held by two counsellors

Ken Byrne and Nadia Kidgell facilitate together, holding the structure, the time and the boundaries of the room.

A small group

The group runs with 6 to 10 people, which keeps it small enough that everyone has room.

Listening counts

You are welcome to sit with the group without speaking. There is no expectation to share anything you have not chosen to share.

Come to the dates that suit you

Each session is booked on its own. Come to one, come to all four, or come back when you want to.

No referral needed

Book online or call us. There is no assessment to pass and no GP referral to organise first.

Grief is not a problem to be solved. The aim of this group is company, with the opportunity to speak honestly about a loss among people who understand it.

Common questions

What does an open group mean?

It means there is no set programme and no planned content. Each session follows what the people in the room bring on the day. The facilitators hold the structure and the time, and you take part in the way that feels right to you.

Do I have to come to every session?

No. Each session is booked and paid for on its own, so you can come to the dates that suit you.

How much does it cost?

$88.00 per person per session. Payment is per session rather than for the whole series.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book online or call us on (08) 6114 1845. No GP referral is needed.

Is this the same as counselling?

No. This is group support alongside other people who are grieving, not one to one counselling. Some people attend the group on its own. Others attend alongside individual grief and loss counselling at Discovery Family Therapy.

How many people will be there?

The group runs with 6 to 10 people, with two counsellors facilitating.

Do I have to speak?

No. Listening is taking part. You are welcome to sit with the group without speaking for as long as you want to.
