Does this sound familiar?

Men often reach counselling when something important is under pressure. You could already know exactly what needs attention, or simply recognise that the way things are going cannot continue.

For adult men.

Your relationship is under strain

Communication has broken down, you feel disconnected from your partner, or your relationship has reached a point where something needs to change.

Separation has changed family life

You are adjusting to the end of a relationship, time away from your children, co-parenting difficulties or uncertainty about what comes next.

Work is taking too much out of you

Pressure, long hours, FIFO work, responsibility or burnout are affecting your wellbeing, patience and relationships at home.

Alcohol has become a concern

Alcohol is affecting your wellbeing, decisions or relationships, or you want support to maintain recovery and reduce the risk of relapse.

Loss or trauma is still affecting you

Grief, a significant loss, trauma or PTSD continues to influence how you feel, relate to others or move through daily life.

Neurodivergence is affecting your relationships

ADHD, autism or other neurodivergent differences can contribute to overwhelm, communication difficulties, repeated misunderstandings or feeling as though you are continually getting things wrong.

This space is for adult men wanting confidential, ongoing support with what is happening in their life or relationships. It is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are in immediate danger or need urgent support, please see the crisis information below, or contact 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Counselling with a clear purpose

Counselling gives you time to look honestly at what is happening, understand the patterns beneath it and work towards changes that matter in your everyday life.

Make sense of what is happening

Slow things down and understand the pressures, experiences and repeated patterns that can affect you.

Identify what you can change

Separate what is within your influence from what is outside your control, particularly during relationship conflict or separation.

Respond rather than react

Develop more effective ways to manage pressure, communicate, make decisions and respond during difficult moments.

Work towards what matters

Define your goals and take practical steps towards the partner, father, family member or person you want to be.

2. Work out what matters

Your counsellor will help you make sense of the situation, identify your priorities and define what you want counselling to help you change.

3. Take practical steps forward

Sessions combine reflection with practical work. You can review what is helping, what remains difficult and whether your approach needs to change.

Common questions

What if my partner is the person asking me to attend?

That's a common starting point, and it's a good one. Whatever brings you here, counselling gives you a space of your own to work out what you want and how you want to move forward.

Will counselling just involve talking about my feelings?

Not necessarily. Sessions are practical and goal-focused. You will talk through what's happening, but the aim is to work out what you want to change and how to get there, not simply to discuss emotions for their own sake.

Can counselling help if anger is affecting my relationships?

Yes. Counselling can help you understand what's driving anger, recognise the build-up earlier and develop more effective ways to respond under pressure.

Do you provide alcohol detoxification or rehabilitation?

No. Discovery Family Therapy does not provide medical detox or residential rehabilitation. Counselling supports the psychological side of recovery, including relapse prevention and the impact of alcohol use on your relationships and wellbeing. If medical detox is needed, we can help you think through appropriate services.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. What you discuss in sessions is confidential, within the legal and ethical limits that apply to all counselling, such as risk of serious harm.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly without a referral or a mental health care plan.

How much does an appointment cost?

A Standard Appointment is $169.40. A couple or family session is $193.60 (60 minutes). Sessions are privately billed, without Medicare or private health rebates.

Can NDIS funding be used?

Self-managed and plan-managed participants can use eligible NDIS funding. Discovery Family Therapy is not a registered NDIS provider.

Can I attend online?

Yes. Sessions with Ken are available online across Australia as well as in person at our South Perth clinic, including for FIFO workers and men managing irregular schedules.

Find the right starting point

You do not need to know exactly what kind of counselling you need. Book directly if you are ready, or tell us a little about what is happening and we will help you choose the most suitable first step.

Not sure where to start? Tell us what is happening, and we will help you find the right first step. Submitting this form does not confirm an appointment.
