What NDIS Counselling Actually Looks Like (And How to Access It in Perth)

You have an NDIS plan. You're looking at your funding and wondering what it actually covers. Maybe you've been told counselling is fundable — but you're not sure what that means in practice, which providers are registered, or how the process works.

You want support for yourself or your child, but navigating the system feels like another task on an already-full plate.

What NDIS Counselling Actually Is

NDIS mental health support covers specialist counselling and therapy — including family therapy, individual counselling, trauma work, and support for anxiety or neurodivergence-related challenges.

It's not the same as psychology (which requires Medicare). NDIS counselling is structured support you access directly through your plan — no GP referral needed. You control it. You choose the provider and book when you need it.

How It Works With Your NDIS Plan

Counselling funding typically sits in 'Supports for Better Daily Living' or 'Core Supports' in your plan. Discovery Family Therapy is NDIS registered, which means:

  • We bill your plan directly — no out-of-pocket cost if your plan covers it

  • We understand NDIS documentation and reporting requirements

  • We can support anxiety, family relationships, trauma, neurodivergence, grief, and more

  • We coordinate with your other supports — so you're not managing it alone

How to Access NDIS Counselling: Step by Step

  1. Check your plan. Log into the NDIS portal or contact your planner. Confirm what funding is available for counselling or mental health support.

  2. Choose a registered provider. Look for NDIS-registered counsellors. Ask what they specialise in — you want someone trained in your specific need.

  3. Make contact. We offer a free enquiry call so you can ask questions before committing. No pressure.

  4. Confirm funding details. We confirm billing, documentation, and what to expect before your first session.

  5. Start sessions. Most people settle into weekly or fortnightly appointments. We work at your pace.

What Happens in a Session

Your first session is mostly listening. The therapist asks about what brought you here, what's working and what isn't, and what you're hoping to change. From there you'll work together on specific goals.

Sessions are confidential. The therapist works at your pace. There's no judgment — just skilled support to move from where you are to where you want to be.

Will it cost me anything? Not if your NDIS plan covers counselling and we're a registered provider. We bill your plan directly.

Do I need a GP referral? No. Your NDIS plan is your referral.

Can I choose the therapist? Yes. You can request a specific therapist when you book.

Still not sure if your plan covers it? We can help you work that out. Call us on 08 6114 1845 or book an enquiry at discoverytherapy.com.au.
